Advanced Testing importance in Kidney Transplantation

Advanced Testing importance in Kidney Transplantation

Nagpur : Dr Feroz Aziz senior Nephrologist& expert in the field of kidney transplantation is in Nagpur to inaugurate Transplant Immunology laboratory at SARASWATI KIDNEY CARE CENTER, Nagpur. He is practising at Kozhikode Kerala and will be discussing on Immunological testing in kidney transplantation on 22nd in a press meet.

Hehighlighted the importance of Advanced Testing as it helps in reducing the overall risk of kidney transplantation. He further added that Advanced Testing is helpful in many ways.He urged people who are going for kidney transplant, to take the advantage of the Advanced Testing facility available in the city and have a safe kidney transplant.

Dr Feroz Aziz a renowned Transplant Physician &Nephrologist ,shares some facts about Advanced Immunology Testing for safe kidney transplant procedure.

Dr FerozAziz said, “ Kidney transplant depends on type of donor , a live donar or deceased donor. He explained the importance of HLA matching and how it is useful to predict the transplant outcome. HLA are proteins that our immune system uses to identify which cells belong in our body and which do not. As we identify blood types by blood group, HLA is the identity of a cell. HLA typing is a test used to match patients and donors for organ transplants. HLA typing can help identify when potential organ donors are a good match for recipients. A good HLA match lowers the risk of organ rejection.

Dr Feroz Aziz gave information about advanced tests like Donor Specific Antibody Testing & Flow CytometryCrossmatchavailable to predict acceptance of donated organ by the recipient . Performing these tests before transplantation can predict the successful acceptance of transplanted organs.

Till recently these tests were mainly available in metro cities. And it used to take more than 7 days to get the reports from these centres. Recently, Immunology lab established at Saraswati Kidney Care Center, Nagpur has started performing all the advanced tests.

He further added”These newer tests will help in deceased donor organ transplantation process. In deceased organ transplantation, organs are to be transplanted in the recipient’s body within a short period of time (generally within 12-24 hours). Performing these advanced tests will help in finding the most suitable recipient for the precious organs.Availability of advanced testing facility at Nagpur will greatly help to expedite the process of organ allotment to most appropriate recipient in this region.

He also shared about the ABO incompatible kidney transplant. Earlier kidney transplantation was only feasible if donor & recipient had compatible blood groups. But now with advances in science, a donor with blood group A can donate the kidney to a recipient with blood group B (or vice versa). This is known as ABO incompatible kidney transplant. Success rates of ABO incompatible transplant are now as good as blood group matched kidney transplants.

He further mentioned that, now , as tests needed for ABO incompatible kidney transplant are available in Nagpur at Immunology lab at Saraswati Kidney Care Center, Nagpur and has facilities to conduct all the required tests for ABO incompatible kidney transplant.

He gave some important advice to patients who are on deceased donor kidney waiting list, that they should undergo dialysis regularly, follow up with their Nephrologist at regular intervals, avoid receiving frequent blood transfusions, and performing tests for detecting your HLA type & anti HLA antibody will help them get better matched organs at the time of organ allocation.
